Please review the new & exciting options for three credits. Au pair Education is now offered in Los Angeles in August & November.

Au Pair Education is a resource designed to assist au pairs in fulfilling their educational component. Cultural Care Au Pair not only coordinates exciting, educational weekend courses through our partners in higher education. we provide information on local colleges and universities that provide affordable, convenient classes for au pairs.

Weekend classes
Au Pair Education has partnered with accredited colleges across the U.S. to offer educational, affordable and convenient weekend classes. Classes are being held in six U.S. cities in the summer and fall of 2008. (A class schedule can be found on the Au Pair Education website.) Our unique Experiencing America class allows students to explore three important aspects of living in the United States and experiencing American life.

The class format
Classes are open to all students and will be found in the class listings of each of our educational partners. The classes are designed to meet the needs of local students as well as students who want to travel to the city of the course. Because the course consists of extensive classroom time, all students, local or visiting, will be housed in student accommodations in the city. Each Au Pair Education weekend course costs just $350 and provides two nights accommodation, meals, snacks, all course materials, a tour of significant landmarks in the city and suggestions for traveling to each location. Successful completion of the course is the equivalent of three credit hours.

The curriculum
Students will begin the class by exploring their own cultural background and learn strategies for dealing with cultural differences and recognizing opportunities for growth from their time abroad. The second aspect of the class embraces America, explored through interactions with American peers and a look at our cultural diversity, traditions, history and politics. The third part of the class focuses on the city where the course is offered. Students will learn about the unique characteristics, youth culture and important social issues of the city.

The classwork and requirements
Students will start with a work-at-home reading and research assignment given to them once they enroll in the class. After 28 hours of classroom time over the course of the weekend, students must complete a final project, due within thirty days of the final class date. Class requirements include the submission of pre- and post-class assignments, classroom attendance and participation Friday, Saturday and Sunday and completion of a class evaluation.

HOST FAMILIES & AU PAIRS—TAKE 5 MINUTES TO READ THIS IMPORTANT PIECE OF INFORMATION.

PLEASE REVIEW THE NEW CALIFORNIA RULE ON DRIVING WITH A CELLPHONE.

On July 1, after a nearly two-year grace period, a new era begins in California: holding a cell phone to your ear and talking while driving will be illegal unless it is an emergency.
In most cases, you will still be able to talk-and-drive, but you will need a hands-free device to do so such as a bluetooth headset, speakerphone set up, or a wired headset.
What Exactly is the New Law?
(1) If you are 18 or older, you are prohibited from holding a phone and talking while driving.
(2) If you are 16 or 17, the only time you can use a cell phone while driving is in an emergency only.
(3) The first offense of the cell phone law will result in a $20 ticket. Subsequent citations will result in $50 tickets. However, with court costs and penalties, the true costs of these tickets will be approximately $76 and $190, respectively.
Here is something else to think about: The new laws go into effect just days before the California Highway Patrol goes on “maximum patrol” throughout the Fourth of July weekend. This means that 80% of CHP officers will have their eyes on the road, and on you and your cell phone.
If it is illegal to hold a phone while talking, how is it possible to dial it or press a button to answer the phone or take a call, even if you talk hands-free?
This is where things may get a bit dicey because the laws are silent on these issues.
The Law basically only bans talking on the cell phone without a hands free device for non emergency calls, therefore, you are allowed to touch the phone to make a call or take one, said Mike Marando, a spokesman for the state Department of Motor Vehicles. “As long as you don’t hold the phone to carry the conversation,” he added.
